Guitar Chords for Beginners

Guitar Lessons for Beginners by Noel Halpin  The first goal of any guitarist who has ambitions to play popular music is to build up a chord repertoire. This is difficult at first as you try to learn all the shapes your hand and fingers must know before you can play chords that will produce a musical sound to form a melody. To do this will take time and a lot of practice, but it will be well worth the time and effort to persevere.

There are about fifteen simple chord shapes that are vital to know.

These are starting with the, E major, then E seventh, the E minor, next on to the A major, then the A seventh, the A minor.

This now takes us on to the D major, then the D seventh, the D minor. Now we progress onto the C major, then the C seventh. Next we move onto the G major, then G seventh.

Now move on to forming a B seventh. Then finally the F major chord.

It becomes a bit more difficult now as you are going to use a barre chord for the F major. You can form this shape by using your four fingers lying across the first four strings which are, the top E, string, the B string, then the G string and the D string.

The position for the fingers on the left hand are, you place your first index finger across the first two strings on the first fret which are the F note and the C note, then you place your next index finger on the G string second fret which gives you the A note, and finally your third index finger on the D string third fret which gives you the F note.

For the purist guitarist who might say this shape is not making a full F chord, he is correct.

The full F chord shape is putting your first index finger all the way across the top fret, pressing down and keeping the other fingers in the positions written above.

There you have the fifteen most basic chords to practice. Once you have become sufficiently knowledgeable on the shapes and positions for these chords, then you can now move onto to playing most popular songs, and possibly do some song writing yourself.

It is with just a few of these chords that some fantastic songs have been written, and became smash hits worldwide.
